Driver accused of doing donuts before rollover crash that seriously injured 1 in Boone County

BOONE COUNTY, Iowa — A Grimes man was charged on Monday for allegedly doing donuts in a field that resulted in a rollover crash that seriously injured one person in August.

During the early morning hours of August 23, Boone County Dispatch received a call from ON-STAR reporting a vehicle rollover crash with injuries. Court records state that deputies with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and other emergency personnel responded to the report, which claimed the crash happened in a field a short distance north of the 300 block of Cedar Street in Woodward.

According to court records, there were five people in a pickup truck and one of them, identified as a male, had become trapped under the truck when the crash occurred. When emergency personnel arrived, they found the victim had been moved out from under the truck but was seriously injured and unconscious. Court records state that the victim was in the bed of the truck when it rolled and was ejected.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital but was later transferred to Nebraska Children’s Hospital ICU. Court records say the victim sustained a broken collar bone, four broken ribs, a lung puncture, and heart bruising.

Deputies at the crash scene identified the driver of the pickup truck as 20-year-old Spencer Colin Kling. According to a criminal complaint, Kling initially told deputies at the scene that he had turned down a bank and his truck flipped. Deputies noted that there appeared to be tire marks consistent with a vehicle doing donuts in the field. In a later conversation, court records say that Kling told deputies that he had been “driving in a reckless manner and wanted to have a fun night.”

On Monday, Kling was arrested in Polk County on a Boone County warrant for serious injury by vehicle. He was booked into the Polk County Jail but as of Tuesday, court records say he has been released on a $5,000 bond. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for October 17.

Court records also show that on Sunday Kling received a citation from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for careless driving.
