WEBSTER CITY, Iowa – Waterfalls aren’t a common sight in Iowa, but one park has not only scenic views, but also easily accessible ways to get to them.
Briggs Woods Park is located in Hamilton County, just southeast of Webster City.
Briggs Woods is probably best known for its waterfalls, which flow from the 70-acre lake at the park into the Boone River. The waterfalls can be reached by hiking a short distance from a paved trail. A word of caution, though–like any waterfall, the flow depends on recent rains and is driven by flow from the lake spillway into the river.
The lake at Briggs Woods is excellent for fishing, and there are lots of piers and jetties to make it more accessible. Boats are allowed, but with an electric motor only. Fishing enthusiasts will be happy to know that sunken tree trunks and other structures have been put in the lake to make the fishing even better.
Visitors can also kayak on the lake. Additionally, there’s a beach for families to enjoy in the summertime or warmer months.
Campers will find 82 camp sites with a mixture of wooded and non-wooded locations. There are also several cabins available to rent.
Briggs Woods Park is one of the oldest in Iowa — about 105 years old. But there’s still plenty to see and do here. And as the fall foliage gets better and we enjoy a final stretch of warm weather, it may be a spot to check out before winter really sets in.
