OSKALOOSA, Iowa — An Oskaloosa handyman is accused of selling items he allegedly stole from a client.

In early September, court documents say the victim reported to police that several items, including geodes and rare blue rocks, had been stolen from her yard and that she had later discovered the stolen items at a store in Oskaloosa. The shop owner claimed that the items were purchased off a man, identified as 45-year-old Lyle Heaberlin, for $350.

According to a criminal complaint, the victim had previously hired Heaberlin to do some yard work for her. The complaint states that when investigators questioned him about the stolen items “he first denied selling the items, then said he found them at the river, said a farmer gave them to him, then a relative.”

Heaberlin was arrested late last week and was charged with fourth-degree theft against an older individual. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for October 15.
