DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines School Board will meet Tuesday evening for a special session to discuss the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Ian Roberts.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Roberts’ attorney announced that Roberts is resigning from the superintendent position. The resignation comes after Roberts was detained by ICE officials on Friday for allegedly overstaying a student visa and failing to comply with a final order of removal from an immigration judge back in May 2024. Officials also accuse Roberts of having a loaded gun, a knife, and $3,000 in cash inside the DMPS vehicle that he was allegedly driving when he was taken into custody.
The school board announced it will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. for a special session to consider either the termination of Roberts’ contract or his resignation. According to the board, a resignation made under contract doesn’t take effect until it’s approved by the board.
Like Monday night’s special session, a portion of the meeting will be held in a closed session, while action taken by the board will be public.
