Fatal pedestrian crash briefly closes portion of Highway 5 in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department temporarily closed a portion of Highway 5 to investigate a fatal pedestrian crash Sunday morning.

According to the DMPD, just after 3:30 a.m. patrol officers and rescue personnel were called to Highway 5 at SW 9th Street on reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle on the highway.

Crews arrived on scene and located an adult male pedestrian deceased at the scene. Authorities say the adult male driver of the involved vehicle was not injured during the incident.

Des Moines Police closed a portion of the highway for around four hours for the investigation. The DMPD Traffic Unit is continuing other parts of the investigation.

Neither the identify of the victim or the driver of the vehicle have been released at this time. Authorities say additional information will be shared as it becomes available for release.
