Madison County residents finally know when they can pay property taxes following government disruptions

WINTERSET, Iowa — Madison County residents will be able to pay their property taxes starting Wednesday, following a delay caused by drawn-out disruptions in the county government.

More than 40 people showed up at the Madison County Board of Supervisors’ meeting on Tuesday morning to hear the update on the situation from Madison County Treasurer Kylee Barber.

The tax statements have been certified, according to Barber. They are being emailed to a third-party vendor today (Tuesday) and will be expedited to be mailed out. The statements will also be online on Wednesday. Barber said If you have all the information tomorrow, you can come in to the office to pay.

The delinquent date is October 24th. That’s when penalties and interest will start for late payments. Property owners have 30 days from when the taxes are certified to pay before those penalties kick in, according to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.

Madison County Auditor Michele Brant and Treasurer Barber have been working for weeks to get the taxes completed, dealing with frustrated residents because of the delay.

Earlier this month, Barber told WHO 13’s Katie Kaplan, “We have people coming into our offices and wanting to fist fight with us,” Barber said during Tuesday night’s Board of Supervisors meeting. “I kid you not — fist fight with us.”

The backlog to certify the property taxes is being attributed to months of disorder within the county government, including a drawn-out process to install a new county Auditor after elected Auditor Teri Kaczinski resigned. A Special Election was held in August to fill the role, and Michele Brant was sworn in to the position. Barber herself took office only a few weeks earlier, replacing former Treasurer Amanda DeVos, who was arrested in January and resigned in July. She is now facing multiple criminal charges.

Barber said the multiple missed deadlines in the process were caused by the leadership issues within the county government and created a snowball effect.
