DSM middle school evacuated after report of ‘bomb’, police say no explosives found

DES MOINES, Iowa — Police have now revealed the reason why Des Moines’ Goodrell Middle School was evacuated Monday afternoon.

Shortly after 3:00 p.m., the Des Moines Police Department received a report from school officials, who told them a student reported another student said they had a “bomb.” Sgt. Parizek, Public Information for DMPD, said school officials found what they believed to be suspicious materials in a student’s backpack.

The school was evacuated temporarily while officers secured the scene and investigated the incident.

Sgt. Parizek said that after the DMPD Bomb Squad responded to the scene, they determined no illegal or explosive materials were in the backpack.

As a precaution, an Explosives Detection K-9 swept the school and did not alert on any explosive materials.

The investigation into the incident continues.
