Fort Dodge’s mayor charged with OWI

FORT DODGE, Iowa — The mayor of Fort Dodge has been charged with operating while intoxicated after police attempted to pull him over last week.

Matt Bemrich, 52, identified in court documents as James Matthew Bemrich, allegedly crossed the center of the roadway multiple times and made an improper turn around 9:00 p.m. on September 10. An officer with the Fort Dodge Police Department attempted to pull him over in the 900 block of 7th Avenue South, but a criminal complaint filed in the case said Bemrich did not stop and instead drove home to his address in the 700 block of Crest Avenue.

The complaint said Bemrich smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking before driving. Field sobriety tests were conducted, in which he showed signs of impairment. A breath sample was tested by a DataMaster breathalyzer, with a result of .180. The legal limit for operating a motor vehicle in Iowa is .08.

Bemrich was also charged with improper use of lanes.

On Tuesday, Bemrich entered not guilty pleas to both charges via his attorney. He also waived his preliminary hearing. His next court date has not been scheduled yet.

A request to Bemrich seeking comment on the charges was unanswered as of the publication of this article.
