DMPS $265 million bond referendum surpasses needed signatures, advances to school board

DES MOINES, Iowa — A $265 million bond referendum for Des Moines Public Schools’ Reimagine Education plan has received enough signatures to be placed on the November ballot, campaign organizers announced on Monday.

Reimagine Education is a five-year plan aimed at improving student experiences within the district. Officials say the plan entails opening more signature schools, expanding its Diploma+ program, enhancing facilities, and more.

The district says that the bond is needed to achieve the plan’s goals, as drops in enrollment over the last several years has led to a reduction of roughly $16 million in state funding.

For several months volunteers with the “Yes for Des Moines” campaign have been collecting signatures and support for the bond referendum. During a press conference on Monday afternoon, Superintendent Dr. Ian Roberts announced that the district received roughly 7,500 signatures to place it on the November ballot.

The petition will be brought to the school board during its meeting on Tuesday where school board members will vote to officially place the bond on the November 4 ballot. The meeting will take place at Central Campus at 5:30 p.m.

According to school leaders, if the bond referendum passes owners of homes valued at $200,000 would pay almost $200 more a year in taxes.
