Porchfest transforms Union Park neighborhood yards into concerts

DES MOINES, Iowa — Hundreds gathered across the Union Park neighborhood Sunday afternoon for the 4th Annual Porchfest.

The music festival brings 19 local bands to 19 porches across the neighborhood for performances. All attendees need to bring is a lawn chair.

Ben Mars, a musician who performed at Porchfest, said that the festival spotlights local Des Moines artists.

“It’s really fun for the musicians to come play. It’s fun to play for our fellow musicians that are here in support. As far as you know, we have other musicians from Des Moines introducing if they’re not playing, they’re introducing the bands and introducing people. So it just really brings the whole community together,” Mars said.

The festival was started as a way to build up the musician community in Des Moines.

Dave Ducharme-Jones, one of the organizers of Porchfest, said that it is great to play in front of so many crowds.

“It’s great to play for these crowds. Yeah, they’re all here for one thing, you know, to get a dose of live local music, that’s what we hope to provide,” Ducharme-Jones said.
