CRESTON, Iowa — A Creston family was displaced after a fire destroyed their home on Thursday afternoon.

According to a post on Facebook from the Creston Fire Department, firefighters were called to the 600 block of North Chestnut at around 3:53 p.m. for a report of a house fire. As firefighters pulled up to the home, they saw large flames billowing out of the bedroom windows.

The CFD said crews first attacked the fire by spraying water through the windows, allowing firefighters to cool the fire and reduce its intensity, making it more manageable.

Additional resources were requested for overhaul, which brought in crews from the Afton Volunteer Fire Department. The fire was extinguished, and crews were returned to service at roughly 6:07 p.m.

The family living at the home were able to escape, the CFD said. No injuries were reported.

The CFD said the Union County Emergency Management Agency is assisting the now displaced family.

An investigation into what caused the fire is underway.
