WAPELLO COUNTY, Iowa — An inmate at Wapello County Jail allegedly tried to escape by crawling through the ceiling.
The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office said on Tuesday that an inmate, who was being held in a multi-inmate cell at the county jail, had tried to escape on August 28 by crawling through the ceiling; however, the sheriff’s office said the ceiling wasn’t able to hold the inmate’s weight and she fell through the ceiling.
Correctional officers who were watching the inmate, identified as Morgan West, on camera intervened and detained her, the sheriff’s office said.
West, who was originally being held on outstanding arrest warrants for violation of probation for a forgery conviction and for failing to appear in court for a theft charge, is now facing additional charges for her alleged escape attempt. Those charges include attempted escape and first-degree criminal mischief.
The sheriff’s office said due to the extent of the damage the jail cell is closed until repairs can be made. As a result, additional inmates will be temporarily housed at other county facilities.
