DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines International Airport launched a new system this week to pick up passengers. Here’s how it works.
When you enter the airport property, follow the signs into the new garage. Stay to the right to enter the hourly parking lot instead of the daily parking lot.
From there, you will see two gates where you can retrieve a ticket. From there, follow the signs further into the garage.
To get to the EZ Pickup section, keep right and you will see 26 parking spots. Each has a sign next to it that has an “area number.” Text that number to the traveler you are picking up, so they know where to find you.
Inside the airport terminal, there are also signs so travelers know how to find the EZ Pickup section.
Once your traveler is in your vehicle, you can follow the exit signs out of the garage. Drivers in the hourly lot have two hours of free parking.
Uber and Lyft drivers are now also only picking up passengers inside the garage. The rideshare spots are located in the section to the left of the EZ Pickup section. There are corresponding signs next to each rideshare stop.
Drivers can still drop off travelers curbside, but parking curbside to pick up passengers is no longer allowed unless the travelers are already waiting curbside with their bags and they’re ready to enter the vehicle
The airport soft-launched this new process last week and it is now being enforced. Citations will be handed out to drivers who park curbside to pick up a passenger.
Drivers who already tried the new system had positive reactions.
“It was fine, it was easy,” said Nebraska native Arnie Sommer.
John Garnatz of Ankeny said, ” [I] just pulled right through the entrance and parked. Not too complicated.”
This change comes as the airport has added six new flights this year. In total, there are now 35 different routes that go through the Des Moines International Airport.
The airport is also undergoing an expansion. A new terminal is being built, and the current terminal will be transformed. Much of the current terminal will be torn down to create a new roadway into and out of the new terminal.
“The whole reason we’ve implemented this EZ Pickup process is because when we do move in to that new terminal, we’re still going to be under construction with the road. So, our pickup and drop off area is going to be much smaller than what we have now. This process, this EZ Pickup process, will continue into the opening of the new terminal,” said airport communications manager, Sarah Hoodjer.
The new terminal is on track to open in January. The airport also now started constructing a skybridge that will connect the new terminal to the current terminal.
The current project that is being upgraded at the airport is creating de-icing pads. These pads will help increase efficiency at the airport. In January, the general manager for the airport’s Integrated Deicing Services, Amanda Berry, joined Today in Iowa live to share the importance of de-icing and demonstrate the behind-the-scenes process.
During those interviews, she shared that the airport did not have a designated area for planes to be de-iced. Berry said this often led to her team being in the way and other planes were unable to move around. Now, the construction of the new de-icing pads will make the process more efficient.
The de-icing pads were delayed a couple weeks and are now on track to open around October 15.
