DES MOINES, Iowa — Skate DSM celebrated the last day of the Des Moines Streetstyle Open by making sure the next generation has the wheels to kickflip and more.
The Des Moines Streetstyle Open is a multi-day event where skateboarders have the opportunity to compete, show off and learn some new moves. During the event, Skate DSM held a giveaway giving 50 helmets and skateboards to metro kids.
Norm Sterzenbach is the president of Skate DSM and says the giveaway helps put the next generation on the right path.
“We always do a giveaway with the Des Moines Freestyle Open because we want to make sure that it’s about giving back, but it’s also about the next generation of skaters and what a cool way to get inspired about skateboarding! Get a brand new skateboard, a brand new helmet, and come down here and see amazing skateboarding,” said Sterzenbach.
The giveaway was part of the Get on Board project which has provided more than 1,200 skateboards and helmets to local youth since 2022.
