IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa Hawkeyes opened up the season with a new quarterback and 34-7 win against the Albany Great Danes.
The Hawkeyes debuted new quarterback Mark Gronowski during their season opener, leaving many wondering what the season will look like.
The Hawks started with a first quarter field goal, with Albany scoring a touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter. Iowa got back into the groove and scored two touchdowns during the second quarter. Leaving the score Iowa 17, Albany 7 at halftime.
Xavier Williams started the second quarter strong with a 43-yard run and touchdown. The Hawkeyes ended the first half on a strong note when Gronowski’s pass to Wetjen resulted in a touchdown strengthening their lead.
The second half kicked off with a Hawkeye touchdown early on in the third quarter, with the Hawks kicking a field goal and then scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Final score Hawkeyes 34, Great Danes 7.
Highlights in the second half include a 55-yard field goal by Drew Stevens and Hank Browns fourth quarter touchdown made a yard out on the third down.
Next week, Saturday, September 6, Iowa and Iowa State will face-off in Ames at Jack Trice Stadium for the CyHawk game. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
