Former MLB stars to compete in Home Run Derby X at Principal Park

DES MOINES, Iowa — The MLB Home Run Derby X will take center stage at Principal Park Saturday night.

The event is in its second year in the U.S. with six locations including Principal Park. It features former MLB stars and well-known collegiate and pro softball players like Ben Zobrist and Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs, Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Oklahoma softball star Jocelyn Alo.

There are four teams of three that will face off in the semi-finals. It will be the Cubs vs. Cardinals, then the Yankees vs. Red Sox – two major rivalries in the MLB. The winner of the two will then play in the final, the champion in Des Moines will then advance to Salt Lake City, Utah in three weeks.

Each game will be three innings with each team alternating turns batting. The offensive team will try to hit homeruns to gain points, while the team on defense will attempt to catch balls that stay in the field to earn points.

Players said that they are excited to participate in the event at Principal Park.

“I had a great time here,” said Rick Ankiel, former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher and center fielder. “I hit three homers in one game here once, so when I found out it was here, I was like, all right, maybe I hope that continues.”

“Keep in mind, I was a line-to-line guy,” said Ben Zobrist, former Chicago Cubs player. “I mean, I think I’m probably most known for a slap hit down the third base line. So this is not my cup of tea generally, but I’m excited to give it a shot.”

“Fortunately, I had some big homers and big moments and now I’m here,” said Jake Arrieta, former Chicago Cubs pitcher. “So yeah, I love to hit fastballs. I don’t like anything that spins and fortunately I won’t see any of that.”

Gates open at 5 p.m. with the first game starting around 6:30 p.m. The night will be full of high energy, fan interactions, and fireworks following the final. More information and tickets can be found here.
