Iowa Senate District 1 Special Election results

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Unofficial results are in. Catelin Drey has been elected to represent Iowa Senate District 1.

On Drey’s win, the Iowa Democratic Party’s chair said:
“For the fourth special election in a row, Iowa voted for change,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “Catelin Drey will listen to the people, not the powerful, get our economy growing, and bring down costs for families. Christopher Prosch and Iowa Republicans spent over $180,000 on this race while Democrats from all over Iowa came together to give money, knock doors, and write postcards. Our state is ready for a new direction, and Iowa Democrats will keep putting forward candidates who can deliver better representation for Iowans.”

Iowa Senator for the 45th District, Jancie Weiner, released the following statement:
“Catelin Drey’s victory in Senate District 1, which President Trump won in November by over eleven points, is a win for all Iowans. Catelin’s agenda of fully funding public schools, affordable childcare and housing, and putting money in the pockets of working Iowans is a clear rejection of the Republican agenda led by Kim Reynolds and the Senate Republicans that have failed Iowans. This win shows that when Democrats fight for Iowa working families, when we get out and listen to Iowans, when we field people who care deeply about their communities, we can win anywhere, including in Northwest Iowa.”

Iowa Auditor of State Rob Sand said:
“Congrats to Catelin Drey on her victory tonight, breaking the supermajority in the Iowa state Senate. Iowans are ready for change.”

Representative for Iowa State House, District 1, briefly congratulated Drey, saying:
“Congrats Senator-elect Drey!!! Big win for Drey for Iowa
Thank you to everyone who helped out!!!”

Iowa State Representative Rob Johnson released a statement saying:
“Tonight in a pivotal special election for Iowa Senate District 1, Democrat Catelin Drey emerged victorious breaking the Republican supermajority in the Iowa Senate. This win means Democrats can now check the governor’s most controversial agency and judicial picks during the upcoming legislative session. Proud of our democracy and even prouder of the families, educators, and grassroots power that made this happen.”

The Woodbury GOP released a statement that said:
“After yet another bruising contest for Iowa State Senate District 1, we regret to share that we’ve fallen short. Despite our significant active voter registration advantage in the district, county, and state, special elections across the nation have proven challenging even in the reddest of states.
Christopher Prosch was a relative newcomer at our Special Nominating Convention in the wake of the death of State Senator Rocky De Witt. After impressing our delegates, Prosch mobilized one of the most aggressive grounds games we’ve seen, especially given the short window.
Despite his platform of Cutting Taxes & Growing Our Economy, Securing the Border & Ending Illegal Immigration, Empowering Parents & Prioritizing Education, and Protecting the Unborn, Senate District 1 residents, they saw fit to choose the type of candidate that the Democrat base craves at the moment.
Job well-done to Prosch for Iowa Senate, and we congratulate Catelin Drey for Iowa and the Woodbury County Democratic Party on their hard-fought victory.”
