Will Iowa consider playing a regular season game overseas?

OurQuadCities (WHBF) — The Hawkeyes are approaching their first game of the season, but their biggest in-state rival, Iowa State, has already won a game overseas in Ireland against Kansas State, 24-21, on Saturday.

According to NCAA.com, teams are permitted to play one regular-season game in a foreign country every four years.

What are the chances that Iowa looks into playing a game overseas?

“In a short word, no,” said Kirk Ferentz, Iowa football’s head coach. “Certainly not if we have to comeback and play the next week. I’ve done that going to Hawaii. It’s not a foreign country, but it might as well be as far as distance. We did it when I was at Maine. I think we flew out of Portland, Portland to Boston, to Atlanta, to Dallas. I mean, it was the longest trip in the history of college football. It’s a lot of wear and tear on a team, especially on the return part of it. So me personally I would rather (not). That’s what bowl games are for.”

The Hawkeyes open the year in Iowa City against Albany on Aug. 30.
