DES MOINES, Iowa — On Tuesday morning another Iowa Democrat joined the party’s primary in the Iowa’s Second Congressional District.
State Representative Lindsay James (D) has been serving in the Iowa House since 2019. She is also an ordained chaplain and has been involved with local politics before being elected to the state level. She was the PTA President of Irving Elementary School in Dubuque, along with serving on the Dubuque Community Development Advisory Commission.
Rep. James told WHO 13 News why she thought this midterm race was the appropriate time for her to seek Congresswoman Ashley Hinson’s (R) seat.
“I’ve spent my entire life listening to people being invited into some of the hardest challenges that they’ve faced and some of the most beautiful celebrations in their life. And through those stories and through those interactions, it’s become very clear to me that Iowans are making impossible choices every single day,” said Rep. James. Those choices she outlined included paying rent or purchasing lifesaving medication and others. “Do I pay for an increasing utility bill or do I buy my child a winter coat? People in Washington, D.C. have stopped listening to everyday Iowans who are making these impossible choices in their lives.”
James mentioned Congresswoman Hinson’s voting track record, along with her vote in support for the spending bill passed in early July. She referenced 27,000 Iowans in Iowa’s Second Congressional district that are at risk of losing health care under that act.
She said that Hinson’s track record is only supporting billionaires and special interests groups. James pitched herself as the alternative as she has deep religious commitments and faith commitments that compel her to care about her neighbor and fight for everyday people.
The Iowa Democratic primary field in IA-02 now has three candidates in the running: Rep. James, Kathryn Dolter and Clint Twedt-Ball. James would not comment on the other two Iowa Democrats that have announced campaigns so far, referring back to priorities that she plans to run on.
