DES MOINES, Iowa — Crews are expected to begin recovery attempts Monday morning for a body that was discovered in the Des Moines River Sunday night.
Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Police Department, said DMPD officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue crews were called to the Women of Achievement Bridge shortly after 9:00 p.m. after receiving a report of a body in the water.
Those first on the scene confirmed there was an obviously deceased person in the water, but because of the nearness to the dam, the swift current, and the darkness, it was determined that crews would wait on recovery attempts until Monday morning.
Sgt. Parizek said police are looking into whether the body in the river is connected to a report received in the early morning hours of August 10th about a person in the river. At that time, emergency responders were unable to locate anyone.
Because of the investigation and recovery efforts, Bobber Park, the Women of Achievement Bridge, and connecting trails are temporarily closed.
