POLK COUNTY, Iowa — A multiple vehicle crash shut down the eastbound lanes of I-80 near Altoona and the Bass Pro Shop early Friday morning, and a Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy assisting with the collision was injured in a second crash.
The first crash happened shortly before 1:30 a.m., according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. The eastbound lanes of traffic were closed during the accident response, and a detour was put in place for drivers. The interstate was reopened about four hours after the crash.
We’re still waiting for information about the initial crash from the Iowa State Patrol.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Department said around 4:39 a.m., a vehicle struck the rear of a deputy’s marked patrol Tahoe, where the deputy was providing traffic control for the accident at mile marker 140. The deputy was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash and suffered minor injuries. They were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
