Three finalists compete for best new food at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, Iowa — The start of the Iowa State Fair means that food vendors are competing for the best new fair food.

Over 65 new foods will debut on the first day of the Iowa State Fair. Out of those, the top 11 were picked as semi-finalists, then narrowed down to the three finalists.

The first is a Bacon Chicken Ranch Egg Roll by Winn and Sara’s Kitchen, featuring chicken and bacon wrapped in an egg roll wrap and drizzled with their homemade ranch. The second is the Three Little Pigs by Whatcha Smokin? BBQ with flavor inspiration from a corndog, cherry soda, and a funnel cake. The third finalist is The Scotcheroo Shake by Over the Top Ice Cream.

Iowa State Fair CEO Jeremy Parsons said that this honor brings significant business opportunities for vendors.

“We know a lot of fairgoers come to the fair to try all those foods, make that vote and then really, it is a business decision,” Parsons said. “We see the numbers that when the vendors are participating in that food contest, there is increased notoriety around them. And the lines might be a little longer as people try those new foods.”
