Crash involving semi caused major I-235 slowdown Thursday morning

DES MOINES, Iowa — Traffic on I-235 in Des Moines was slow Thursday morning as heavy rain hampered drivers and contributed to some crashes.

A crash around 9:30 a.m. involving a semi and two other vehicles in the eastbound lanes of the interstate at the Des Moines River Bridge reduced traffic to one lane for hours. It was completely reopened around 12:18 p.m., according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer of the Des Moines Police Department, said there were minor injuries reported in the crash.

Video from the scene showed that a railing had been broken off and partially fallen on the embankment, as well as some damage to the bridge’s concrete.

Another crash was reported on eastbound I-235 near 28th Street around the same time. Sgt. Parizek said two vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.
