Heat builds, more heavy rain possible in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — Heavy rain fell in spots overnight, and we did have a few strong wind gusts as well. More storms will move through during the daylight hours on Thursday, especially in the morning. Your weather timeline takes you into Friday, and the HRRR computer model below takes you through Thursday’s rain timing.

Dewpoints will continue to increase into the weekend, and heat indices will be in the neighborhood of 100 Friday and Saturday. Expect breezy conditions Friday.

We may also see some smoke reappear in the atmosphere Friday, this time from wildfires to the southwest of Iowa.

A boundary will hang out in the vicinity of Iowa Saturday through Tuesday, keeping us in intermittent rain chances during that timeframe. The Euro computer model below shows you the timeframe. Heavy rain totals will be possible by the end of that stretch, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see 3″ to isolated 6″ totals between Saturday morning and Tuesday evening.

We may also see a severe chance Saturday night, as shown in Colorado State’s severe weather algorithm below. Wind and hail would be the main threats.

Highs for the next 6 days are above, and your WHO 13 7-day forecasts below. Extended outlooks keep us in above normal temperatures past mid-August, so get used to the heat!
