William Byron stretches fuel, wins Iowa Corn 350

NEWTON, Iowa– The checkered flag flies for William Byron at the Iowa Speedway, as the driver of 24 secures the win for the Iowa Corn 350.

“It’s awesome, I mean this year it’s really come full circle… It’s just good to finally get a win today,” said Byron.

Chase Briscoe starts the race with the pole. Byron quickly got to first, with Brad Keselowski close behind as the two battled for the lead in the first stage of the race. Keselowski passed Byron on lap 68.

In the last 120 laps, drivers started to pick up the pace. In an action-packed third stage, drivers navigated 12 cautions and restarts, as Byron and Briscoe shuffled towards the front.

“It really made the strategy pretty tricky, a lot of people pitted there to be able to make it on fuel, thinking that was the right play,” said Byron

But Byron was able to make every last drop count, stretching his fuel to secure the win, saying, “We were in a position where we needed a lot of cautions, and we weren’t expecting to go to the end on fuel, and then it started to open that up, that opportunity and we just saved a bunch of fuel there at the very end.”

Byron’s cup win completes the trifecta for him at the Iowa Speedway, as Byron has won in both the truck series and Xfinity at the track before.

“I love coming to here, it has a ton of meaning for me, I feel like it was the first true intermediate style racetrack that I went to when I was younger… It just feels like it’s come full circle,” said Byron.

It was a race that kept drivers and fans on the edge of their seats. Now, William Byron is cementing his name in Iowa Speedway history, taking home the Iowa Corn 350 trophy.
