DES MOINES, Iowa — A backpack giveaway held in Des Moines offered more than just school supplies as the 2025-2026 school year approaches.
Chase Bank and the Boys and Girls Club distributed 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies on Saturday. The event provided essential school supplies while featuring financial literacy and healthy food activities for children, helping them learn important skills.
“They’re going to stop at our different stations. They’re going to do a financial escort. So some fun activities for them to learn some different skills around how to save and in addition, we got snacks, and we have our Meals from the Heart partner as well,” said Marcia Treichel, Chase Bank Community Manager.
Organizers also held workshops for the parents, hoping to bring discussions on financial literacy back into homes, including what to do when kids go shopping, best budgeting practices, and identifying needs versus wants.
“I really like that because I have been teaching my daughter about financial literacy since she was three years old. So, it’s really cool that she got to go around the table and do the activities,” said Kanasia, a parent at the event. “She definitely enjoyed it. She said this was the best she’s been through, so that’s cool coming from a six-year-old.”
The school year is fast approaching, with a recent survey showing that more than 85% of parents were worried about tariffs affecting school shopping. Here in Iowa, parents say that local businesses and organizations helping out are appreciated.
“It is so much for everything these days. And even with the sales, it’s just not enough, you know? So, I really appreciate it, just to get us going and start it with a little bit of support,” said Kanasia.
Earlier this week, Caitlin Clark made a return to Des Moines, where she handed out supplies to Des Moines Public Schools students and helped celebrate a new outdoor court.
