DES MOINES – Multiple residents’ homes at Marshalltown Estates Mobile Home park are flooded following intense rain.
Jayde Roberts, a resident at Marshalltown Estates Mobile Home park, said that she woke up Wednesday to a flooded home.
“Last night when it was raining, I looked outside in the street, didn’t think it was going to flood. So when I woke up this morning, my car was like up to almost the doors with water because I was still parked in my driveway.” Roberts said.
Roberts required a neighbors’ assistance to get her children out of her home.
“So me and my kids were still inside and luckily my neighbor was able to pull her car up just now to the back door and we literally had to like, make a human chain and pass the kids to her so that we could get out of the house,” Roberts said.
Athena Valdez, a resident at Marshalltown Estates Mobile Home Park, said that flooding has been a frequent problem at the park.
Every time it rains and we get like a substantial amount of rain, it floods out here. It’s been doing this for the last few years. This is the third flooding in two years.” Valdez said.
Valdez said that the management company that oversees Marshalltown Estates Mobile Home Park, Augustine Property Management, has not done enough to manage flooding.
“Don’t be raising the rents until you start actually doing something to prevent the flooding. People have a right to be able to get in and out of their home the right way, not having to have people back up to their back door to get kids out.” Valdez said.
Nathaniel Apregilio, the Chief Operating Officer of Augustine Property Management, released a statement on the flooding taking place at Marshalltown Estates Mobile Home Park.
“Augustine Property Management continues to diligently work at the property and remediate excess rain and stormwater runoff from adjacent properties. We have purchased a water pump, rented larger pumps on several occasions, and recently made repairs to a flood gap on the berm (built by the Army Corps). We continue to work with our residents to timely respond to all repair and maintenance needs. Unfortunately, the primary reason for excess water at our mobile home park is due to periodic high levels of rain and the combination of having to receive water from the neighboring property with a higher grade faster than we can discharge property downgrade. We are exploring working with local governments to address the adjacent property concerns. It is our understanding that this has been a challenge for several decades, and one that we are actively working to improve upon.”
