Arrest made in Des Moines vehicle vandalism and shooting case

DES MOINES, Iowa — An arrest has been made in an ongoing investigation involving the attempted theft of vehicles and a shooting that damaged a home and car earlier this month.

Michael Hargrove, 20, was arrested on July 25th and is being held in the Polk County Jail on the following charges:

Michael Hargrove
  • Intimidation With A Dangerous Weapon
  • Conspiracy To Commit A Forcible Felony
  • Going Armed With Intent
  • Felon In Possession Of A Firearm
  • Criminal Mischief – 2nd Degree – 2 counts
  • Burglary – 3rd Degree
  • False Report To Law Enforcement

Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Police Department, said the charges are linked to separate incidents that happened on July 19th. Police were called to the 3600 block of 30th Street a little before 11:00 p.m. on a report of multiple vehicles that were vandalized in the VA Hospital parking ramp. Officers determined the vehicles were damaged during attempts to steal them.

Suspects involved in the incident were identified arriving and leaving the scene in a silver Ford Flex.

About an hour later, officers were called to the 2400 block of Saylor Road on reports of gunfire. Sgt. Parizek said no one was injured in the incident, but the victim’s home and vehicle were hit by at least 28 bullets. Investigators learned that multiple suspects approached the home and opened fire, then left the scene in a silver Ford Flex.

No evidence was found by police that linked the residents of the home to any activity that would have led to them being targeted.

A collaboration between DMPD’s Crimes Against Persons and Crimes Against Property sections helped detectives learn that on July 20th, Hargrove reported a silver 2010 Ford Flex stolen. Investigation into the claim turned up evidence showing the report was false and linked him to the July 19th crimes.

DMPD detectives are continuing to investigate.

Hargrove was previously convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter and Delivery of a Controlled Substance for selling fentanyl to a Johnston woman who overdosed and died in 2023.
