Power outages, tree damage from overnight storms

DES MOINES, Iowa — Storms that rolled through central Iowa overnight have brought down power lines, causing electricity outages for thousands of customers in the Des Moines metro.

As of 6:25 a.m., Monday, MidAmerican Energy was reporting 23,961 customers were without power.

The Des Moines Police Department said traffic lights in some areas have been affected by the outage and cautions drivers to be careful on the roads this morning as crews work to restore power.

Some of the intersections affected are:

  • MLK Jr Pkwy & Ingersoll Ave
  • Fleur Dr & Highview Dr (DSM International Airport Entrance)
  • Grand Ave, 17th St to 42nd St
  • SW 9th St & Army Post Rd (Lane reductions due to downed tree)

The strong winds that caused the outage also blew down trees and left debris in the roadway in some areas.

Allow emergency crews to respond to the issues and give them space to work.
