IOWA — Overnight storms brought heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and strong winds through central Iowa.

While most storms stayed below severe limits, a few wind gusts made it to 50-55 mph in central Iowa early this morning.

There were a few higher rainfall totals, but most stayed under 1″ of rain for Central Iowa.

The daytime hours both today and Tuesday will be sunny, hot and steamy. There is an Extreme Heat Warning in effect today from noon to 8 PM, as heat indices in Central Iowa could reach 115°. A Heat Advisory will be in effect for the same time frame in northern to northeast Iowa for heat indices of 105° to 110°.

In the overnight hours, another complex of severe storms will form at the top of the ridge in place over the Central US leading to all the heat. The northern half of Iowa is in a slight to enhanced risk area for severe storms.

The storm will develop in the Dakotas and move across Minnesota late tonight, diving south into far northern Iowa (communities like Kossuth County to Mason City) and further south and east towards Iowa Falls to Grinnell through 3 AM Tuesday morning.

The main risk with these storms will be damaging winds.

Tuesday will be hot once again in the 90s with heat indices just over 100°. But a nice cooldown arrives by Thursday with highs in the 70s.
