Gabe on the Go: Getting outside for ‘Farm School’ at Rose Farm

NORWALK, Iowa – Trying to pry the kids away from screens can be a challenge, especially over summer vacation. But a place that’s an escape from the hustle and bustle is also hoping to get the kids outside and teach them more about the world around us.

Rose Farm in Norwalk launched “Farm School” a few years ago. It’s a free program for those who participate, but tickets need to be reserved in advance.

Farm School has a variety of themes and several partners from around central Iowa, including the West Des Moines Public Library and the Blank Park Zoo.

The Farm School’s event on July 25th will be the last day with the West Des Moines Public Library’s “bookmobile” this season. It will also bring in the Blank Park Zoo to talk about the importance of pollinators all around us. The session involves interactive events and games but perhaps most importantly gets kids outside.

Friday’s lesson — on pollinators — is fitting given the setting. A prime feature of Rose Farm is its flower farm. Visitors can pick their own flowers or visit the shop to find prearranged bouquets and other finds.

Rose Farm also hosts art, floral, and culinary workshops and classes year-round. There’s a guest house on the property for those looking to extend their visit, and a recent grant from the state of Iowa will help Rose Farm expand its farm-to-table food offerings.

If you’re interested in Farm School or visiting Rose Farm for flowers or one of their many events, you can visit their website here.
