MALCOLM, Iowa – Glamping and agritourism are on the rise across Iowa, and there’s a spot in Poweshiek County where you can enjoy a night in a Conestoga wagon with views of American buffalo.
Sunset Hills Bison Ranch started out as the name implies — a bison ranch. The Kriegel family got their first herd in 2020, and it has been growing ever since.
The family then moved into the hospitality space, adding a cabin to the ranch about a year later. The cabin sleeps seven and is great for a large family or group.
More recently, Sunset Hills started offering a glamping experience with Conestoga wagons. The wagons are home to a king bed and bunk beds, along with a coffee bar. Perhaps most importantly, they have heat and air conditioning to keep them comfortable no matter the weather.
A new “deluxe covered wagon” also has an attached bathroom and is larger than the other wagons. Guests staying in one of the standard wagons will need to make use of the bathroom and shower house that’s just steps away.
In addition to a unique sleeping experience, glampers will also be able to make use of fire pits, stock tank pools, and outdoor spaces for each wagon. There are also great, up-close views of bison grazing nearby (if the herd decides to come nearby of course). Guests say they appreciate the quiet atmosphere, great stargazing conditions, and amazing sunsets.
Visitors will also be able to visit the store at Sunset Hills, which has a variety of bison products. The Kriegel family emphasizes that they’re a bison ranch first, and they take pride in their herd and the bison products offered there.
