Mother, son arrested in violent Ankeny home invasion

ANKENY, Iowa — A mother and son are facing charges connected to a violent home invasion that happened earlier this month in Ankeny.

Gemiere Goodwin, 27, and Merrelita Kintz, 45, are being held in the Polk County Jail. They are both charged with:

  • Attempted Murder
  • Burglary 1st Degree
  • Robbery 1st Degree
  • Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury
  • Theft 2nd Degree
  • Unauthorized Use of Credit Card

The Ankeny Police Department said the charges are connected to a July 1 burglary in which an elderly victim was beaten and strangled, and suffered serious injuries. The victim was treated for the injuries at the hospital and later released.

Police said cash, a gun, and personal documents were stolen from the home in the incident.

Goodwin was identified as a suspect by investigators and he was found at a smoke and vape store in Des Moines on July 3rd. During the arrest, Goodwin resisted, and an Ankeny Detective and a Des Moines Officer suffered minor injuries.

Goodwin was found to have the stolen gun on him as well as other stolen items with the victim’s name at the time of his arrest. He was additionally charged with:

  • Interference with Official Acts with a Firearm
  • Interference with Official Acts Causing Injury

More evidence gathered following the execution of a search warrant at Goodwin’s residence showed that his mother, Kintz, conspired with him in the execution of the crime.

Kintz was arrested on Tuesday. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 1st.

Court records show Goodwin is set to be arraigned in the case on August 25th.
