DES MOINES, Iowa – A Des Moines pool was delayed opening until late June due to a delayed shipment of a filter.
Birdland Pool, located by Des Moines North High School, didn’t open until June 30, nearly halfway through the pool’s season. To thank people for their patience, the pool offered discounted admission rates. The prices dropped from $5 for adults and $3 for kids, to $2 for adults and $1 for kids.
Ben Page, Director of Des Moines Parks and Recreation, said that attendance is doing well, but they won’t know a percentage increase due to discounted admission until the end of the season, which is Aug. 9.
Des Moines resident Lukas Alexander says they enjoy spending their time at the pool over the summer and think that the discounted rates are a great idea.
“We got passes the first time we came here, I think, and we’ve just had them ever since,” Alexander said. “But I find it nice that it’s a bit cheaper for people who can’t get passes. So, I like that it’s cheaper this year.”
Page said that admission rates will return to normal next year. He also said that the pool will not close anytime soon and will open next season.
Birdland Pool is open Monday-Friday 1 p.m.-6:30 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
