Des Moines man charged in shooting that killed his step-grandson, DMPD says

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man has been charged in an early Tuesday morning shooting that killed his step-grandson the Des Moines Police Department announced.

At around 12:45 a.m. officers with the DMPD responded to a shooting in the 200 block of Bell Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 38-year-old man with gunshot wounds as well as the suspected shooter. The victim, identified as Ryan Schonlau, died from his injuries at the scene.

On Tuesday afternoon, the DMPD announced that the suspect detained at the shooting scene, now identified as 73-year-old David Lee Ramsey, had been officially charged. Ramsey faces one count of first-degree murder and has been booked into the Polk County Jail.

According to the DMPD, Schonlau was Ramsey’s step-grandson and they both had been living at the home where the shooting occurred.

No additional information has been released.
