DES MOINES, Iowa – After some cooler-than-normal weather, the heat and humidity return to central Iowa along with storm chances.
Temperatures only rise to the low 80s Friday. Skies will remain cloudy through the day, but the humidity will be on the rise, leading to the potential for overnight storms.
Storms are expected to fire in southern Minnesota and southeastern South Dakota and move southeast. Storms will arrive in far northwest Iowa after midnight, making this an overnight storm threat occurring in the very early morning hours Saturday. A line is expected to develop and move southeast. Some weakening is expected, but storms could still bring strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning. The line should arrive in the metro around 5-7 AM. Rain will likely linger through the morning.
Saturday afternoon will be drier overall, but a few pop-up storms will still be possible. More widespread showers and storms redevelop overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. Sunday morning will also be the wettest period of the day, with drier conditions and just a few pop-ups possible Sunday afternoon.

Severe weather is most likely to our northwest. Far northwestern Iowa will also carry a risk for a tornado or two, with the risk becoming more of a wind threat as they move southeast. The tornado threat will still not be zero, so it will need to be monitored carefully. As mentioned, some weakening is expected as the storms move into central Iowa, which will be a less favorable environment.
Storm chances linger into early next week. The heat will also return, with temperatures pushing closer to the low 90s.
