WHO 13 NEWS – Iowa veteran Joedy VanVelzen made it to New Hampshire hiking the Appalachian Trail and up 4800 feet to the summit of Mount Moosilauke.
VanVelzen surpassed the 1,800-mile mark and said seeing the mile markers on the trail is affirmation that he is going to finish the goal of nearly 2,200 miles through 14 states.
He’s thankful for hostel stays, through Warrior Expeditions, to be able to get cleaned up, dry out, and do some laundry before heading back out on the trail. He described the experience so far as very difficult, very enjoyable, and life-changing.
VanVelzen said mental toughness is probably the most important key to a successful Appalachian Trail hike. He has less than 400 miles to go until the finish line in Maine.
