APPANOOSE COUNTY, Iowa — A man has been arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder following a shooting in rural Mystic Tuesday night.
The Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies were called to 15440 470th Street around 10:32 p.m. on reports that multiple people had been injured in a shooting. When they arrived, deputies found 62-year-old Randy Walker and his son, 36-year-old Destry Walker, who each had injuries.
Medical care was provided by the deputies after securing the scene, and Randy Walker was transported by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital. He remains hospitalized.
Destry Walker was pronounced dead at the scene despite the deputies’ efforts.
As the homicide investigation began, law enforcement was notified about a motorcycle crash and an altercation in the 18000 block of 176th Street. During a search of the area, 51-year-old Robert Barrell was discovered hiding in the weeds.
The ACSO said information discovered at the scene of the shooting and the motorcycle crash led to murder and attempted murder charges being filed against Barrell.
He was taken into custody without incident and is being held in the Appanoose County Jail.
The investigation into the shooting continues.
