URBANDALE, Iowa — Police have released the name of an Urbandale man who died after a tree fell on him while bicycling on the Raccoon River Valley Trail over the weekend.
The Urbandale Police Department said in a news release provided Wednesday that emergency responders were called to a portion of the trail near the 13400 block of Douglas Avenue around 8:54 a.m. on July 12th on a report of a fallen tree and an injured bicyclist.
Police said the bicyclist, identified as 61-year-old Curtis Leaverton, was discovered by another trail user. He had been struck by a large tree that fell across the trail.
Emergency crews responded promptly and Leaverton was removed from under the tree and transported to the hospital. Leaverton later died despite life-saving efforts.
