DES MOINES, Iowa — The list of 67 new Iowa State Fair foods now has a top three and Iowans will get to vote for their favorite during the fair.
A group of judges narrowed the list from the top 11 to the three finalists on Tuesday.
The 2024 Iowa State Fair People’s Choice Best New Food was Winn and Sara’s Kitchen, and they’re back again in the top three this year.
They made the Bacon Chicken Ranch Eggroll, which is a crispy eggroll with chicken, bacon, white cheddar, and a drizzle of their famous ranch. It will cost $15 at the fair.
“The chicken and the ranch were very popular at our restaurant. We used that to make the eggroll, it’s a great food for the fair,” said Huynh Nguyen of Winn and Sara’s Kitchen.
Next on the list is a third-year finalist, Whatcha Smokin? BBQ.
They created the Three Little Pigs, which are three ham balls. They were inspired by this year’s fair theme, Fair Sweet Fair, and created sweeter flavors for all three ham balls. The flavors included honey mustard with cornbread crumbles, cherry soda with Maraschino glaze, and the funnel cake, which is a vanilla glaze with powdered sugar. This will cost $13 at the fair.
“It’s our third year here and just to be in the top three, three years in a row, always a bridesmaid we’re ready to be the bride, so it’s just an incredible honor to be here as a semifinalist,” said Gwen Page of Whatcha Smokin? BBQ.
The third finalist also won a new prize this year for Sweetest Fair Food. It’s the Scotcheroo Shake by Over the Top.
The ice cream shop is no stranger to the top 11, but it is their first year as a finalist.
The shake has handmade peanut butter-butterscotch scotcheroo ice cream, swirled with fudge, and packed with chewy chunks. It will be $12 at the fair.
“There’s a lot of anticipation that goes into today. We knew what we had was delicious, we love it, but you never know how it’s going to be received and you don’t know what you’re up against either so very excited,” said Natalie Carroll with Over the Top.
