IOWA — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is urging Iowans to avoid over a dozen state beaches following their latest round of testing.

On Friday, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources released a list of 14 beaches that exceeded the state’s threshold for E. coli. These beaches include:

  • Backbone Beach in Delaware County
  • Beed’s Lake Beach in Franklin County
  • Blue Lake Beach in Monona County
  • Bobwhite State Park in Wayne County
  • Denison Beach in Sac County
  • Lake Ahquabi Beach in Warren County
  • Lake Darling Beach in Washington County
  • Lake Manawa Beach in Pottawattamie County
  • Lake of Three Fires Beach in Taylor County
  • McIntosh Woods Beach in Cerro Gordo County
  • Nine Eagles Beach in Decatur County
  • Pleasant Creek Beach in Linn County
  • Prairie Rose Beach in Shelby County
  • Union Grove Beach in Tama County

The DNR conducts weekly tests at more than three dozen public swimming beaches from the week before Memorial Day through Labor Day. Last week, the Iowa DNR said swimming was not recommended at 12 state beaches.

A swimming not advised warning is now in place for the beaches until E. coli levels drop below the state’s allowable threshold.
