CLIVE, Iowa — A West Des Moines man won $100,000 after picking his own Powerball numbers, something he normally doesn’t do.
At his wife’s request, William Rogers says he normally lets the computer pick his ticket numbers.
“She always knows when I pick the numbers because she recognizes some,” Rogers told the Iowa Lottery on Thursday. “Now I don’t think she’ll ever, ever say, ‘Don’t you pick it!’ because I picked all these and I got five out of six.”
Rogers had purchased the ticket at the Hy-Vee at 1990 Grand Avenue in West Des Moines and discovered his big win while checking the numbers with his wife, Yoko, over their morning coffee.
“Obviously, my eyes got big,” Rogers said. “They widened up. I couldn’t believe it and had to look at it multiple times to be sure.”
Rogers told the Iowa Lottery they were so busy being excited about winning, they hadn’t considered what to do with the winnings. They say new furniture, which they last bought in 1988, and saving for the future are likely. Rogers says they’ll go about their normal daily lives with some extra peace of mind.
“We’re not going to go out and blow it,” Rogers said. “That’s just how our lifestyle has been.”
Rogers’ ticket matched four of five white balls and the Powerball in Wednesday’s drawing, and was one number away from winning that night’s $175 million jackpot. No one won the jackpot that night, which now stands at an estimated $190 million for Saturday’s drawing.
