DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department says the person injured during a shooting in the River Bend neighborhood Saturday night has died.
According to DMPD, just before 9 p.m., officers were called to Ohio Street and University Avenue on reports of gunshots. One person was injured by gunfire and was transported to a Des Moines hospital by the Des Moines Fire Department. That person has since died.
Authorities conducting the investigation say evidence indicates that the incident began around 8:15 p.m. after a hit-and-run crash occurred at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Hull Avenue.
The driver fled the location on foot, and two family members of the other driver began to search for the person who fled. Just before 9 p.m., they located the fleeing driver near Ohio Street and University Avenue, who was now accompanied by a 30-year-old male armed with a baseball bat.
Police say the 30-year-old reportedly raised the bat, causing the searching family members, a 21-year-old male, to be fearful. The 21-year-old was armed with a handgun, which he drew and fired.
Des Moines Police Department Crimes Against Persons detectives have interviewed the shooter and witnesses. Authorities say following consultation with the Polk County Attorney’s office, no charges have been filed at this time.
Additional information will be shared as it becomes available for release.
