One dead following officer-involved shooting in Tama County

TAMA, Iowa — One person is dead after a welfare check turned into an officer-involved shooting overnight in Tama County.

According to the Tama Police Department, just after 1 a.m., Tama County dispatch received a call for a welfare check on an adult male who was reportedly wanting to harm himself. A second caller also requested a welfare check and said the man was armed with a gun.

Officers located the man with a firearm just after 1:35 a.m. in the 800 block of W 13th Street. An officer fired their weapon, striking the man. Following the shooting, officers initiated first aid until Tama EMS arrived. The man was transported to the Marshalltown Emergency Room, where he was pronounced dead.

The name of the man has not been released at this time as officers notify the family.

The name of the officer will not be disclosed at this time; the officer has been placed on critical incident leave per department policy.

Authorities say this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations was on scene and is assisting in the investigation. The Iowa Attorney General and Tama County Attorney’s Office will review the case.
