GRANGER, Iowa – Tucked into the northwestern corner of Saylorville Lake is a county park that could be easy to forget or overlook, but it would be a mistake to do so.
Jester Park sits on over 1,600 acres of land in northern Polk County. The park is home to campgrounds, like many other spots surrounding Saylorville Lake. You’ll also find trails and places to have a picnic.
Jester Park has several unique features, though. The park is home to herds of bison and elk that can be observed by visitors. There are also “natural playscapes” for kids — essentially turning the park’s surroundings into a playground. These spaces also have water features to keep kids cool during the hot summer months.
Near the entrance of the park is Jester Park Nature Center. The Nature Center has information for visitors and includes interactive and educational exhibits for adults and kids to check out.
Jester Park is also home to a recreation center. The recreation center has more unique activities like archery and even bouldering. Visitors can also rent fishing and paddling equipment to enjoy on one of the bodies of water found in Jester Park.
Another unique feature — an equestrian center. The equestrian center hosts camps and other horseback riding programs. Reservations are strongly encouraged.
Finally, Jester Park is home to a golf and mini golf course. If all those features and activities aren’t enough, Prairie Stomp, a summer concert series, kicked off for the first time this season last week. Two more events are scheduled for July 17 and August 7 from 6 PM to 8 PM.
For more information on Jester Park and its many features, visit the park’s website here. The web page links to the Nature Center, Recreation Center, Equestrian Center, golf course, and camping sections of the park.
