POLK COUNTY, Iowa — Firefighters from multiple metro agencies assisted in a commercial building fire overnight just north of the Des Moines city limits.
Just after 9:00 p.m., a patrol sergeant with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office spotted the fire in the 600 block of Northwest 46th Place, said Lt. Mark Chance, the public information officer for the PCSO. The location is about five blocks east of the Bridgestone Plant on Northwest 2nd Street.
Multiple calls to 911 came in as well because of the thick black smoke that was visible from the interstate.
When fire crews arrived at the building, which housed a furniture restoration business, the structure was engulfed by flame. Lt. Chance said firefighters were able to get water on the fire quickly to get it under control. A portion of the building eventually collapsed as crews worked.
They also hosed down nearby buildings to prevent the fire from spreading.
“The building that was on fire they restored furniture. And there was a lot of chemicals inside the building, that’s what kinda stoked the fire,” said Lt. Chance.
Officials say the building was not occupied at the time of the fire, and an evacuation was not necessary for nearby residents due to the rapid containment of the flames by crews.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
