Urbandale residents to help reimagine popular park

URBANDALE, Iowa — The city of Urbandale is inviting residents to share their ideas to improve the Walker Johnston Park.

The city installed several signs around the park with a QR code that links to a survey where residents can submit their ideas. They can share what features they like about the park and what improvements they want to see.

The park is central to the Urbandale community, hosting several ball games throughout the week and events at the community center.

The Fourth of July fireworks will also take place at the park this Friday evening.

The following is a list of amenities that will remain at the park:

  • Pickleball Court
  • Tennis Courts
  • Giovannetti Community Shelter
  • Tree House Structure
  • Fishing Pier
  • Creek Access and Outdoor Classroom
  • Trail Access

Scott Hock is the Assistant Director for the Urbandale Parks and Recreation Department. He said city officials were already planning to renovate the park’s bathrooms, so they wanted to get the community’s feedback on what other improvements can be made.

“Our goal is to make sure we get the citizens input and then we’ll bring that before council. City council is always supportive of these type of things. We want to get that information to them. Our goal is really to put in what our residents want and move those projects forward,” he said.

Dan Tripp is a Des Moines resident who said he goes to the park frequently for ball games.

He suggested, “The bathroom situation could be improved a little bit. It’s nice that they added the pickle ball court. It’s nice that they’re continuing to add things. Maybe some more trees.”

Other community members at the park also supported having more shade.

Hock said his goal is to have all of their ideas set by the fall, but renovations may take several years.
