DES MOINES, Iowa — The final day of the Des Moines Arts Festival is underway at Western Gateway Park.
The 28th annual Des Moines Arts Festival kicked off on Friday with 195 artists showcasing their work. Colleen Murphy, the director of community relations for the festival, said they use a blind jury process to choose artists.
This year there are around 20 local artists at the festival and the rest came from 35 states across the country.
Murphy said the festival is always growing and adding new programs for people to enjoy. This year, they added a new literary program and a film festival for DMACC students to display their work.
“We’ve been really working on diversifying our mediums that we show,” said Murphy. “We’re really known for visual arts with the juried art fair, but we do our best through the programming to be able to shine a light on all the different types of art there is.”
People come from all across Iowa to the festival. Ike Branstad is from Clear Lake and said this is his second year attending the festival with his friends.
“I don’t experiment a lot with art. I also don’t have a place to hang a bunch of art, so it’s a good way to get my fill of art and not necessarily own it,” he said.
The final day of the festival kicks off at 11 a.m. and goes until 5 p.m.
