GRIMES, Iowa — The Grimes Farmers and Community Market is back for another year at Heritage Park.
The market originally started at the library with only a handful of vendors, but three years ago, new market directors brought the market to Heritage Park and expanded.
“Grimes is a growing community, one of the fastest ones I believe in the state. And so, it’s so cool to have a place where the community can come together and just have some fun, shop a little bit, support the amazing vendors,” said Matt Bennett, a co-director for the market.
This year there are over 60 vendors selling things like homemade crafts, jewelry, food, and more.
One of the vendors is Baldy’s Best Hot Sauce, which is owned by Dustin Coy of Johnston. He sells homemade hot sauce that he said is unique because he ferments the vegetables that he uses.
His daughters are also involved in the market by selling handmade bracelets.
“It turned into a great family activity for all of us,” said Coy.
Another vendor is La Palma Mexican Taqueria. Janessa and Pablo Guardiola sell breakfast burritos and traditional agua frescas, or juice made with water, fruit, and sugar. They make the burritos and juice before the market starts.
People can also customize a burrito by reaching out to them on their Facebook page. Many people with food allergies will utilize this.
“People love it, which is awesome sharing what I grew up eating,” said Pablo.
With the market starting at 8 a.m., one popular vendor is Curious Joe because they sell coffee.
Owner, Danny Rittgers says some of the coffee they sell can’t be purchased anywhere else in the world. One of their coffee beans, Treasure Hunters, only had 20 kilos made this past year.
“We’ve really enjoyed the Grimes community,” he said.
One of the original ten vendors when the market first started is Wilsons Farm Produce, which based in Adel. Owner Gretchen York watched the market expand overtime.
“It’s always exciting to see any of those smaller farmers markets expand and grow,” she said.
York takes part in other farmers markets during the week, including Pleasant Hill, Adel, Waukee, and Perry. She is mostly known for her tomatoes, which is why they plant around 800 tomato plants every year.
The Grimes Farmers and Community Market takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. at the Heritage Park in Grimes.
