INDIANOLA, Iowa — Friday was the first day of the Discmania Challenge at Pickard Park in Indianola.
The tournament is one of 15 on the PDGA tour, and brought hundreds of fans to spectate.
Ty Tannatt, the Discmania Challenge Tournament Director, said that disc golf is still finding its footing in the professional sports world.
“This is the fifth time we’ve been on the disc Golf Pro Tour. I kind of consider disc golf, in general, like a five day old baby. Like, that’s how new we are. We’ve got a long way to go to really find ourselves,” Tannatt said.
Tannatt said the Discmania Challenge drew professionals from across the world.
“We have players come from all over the world, you know, specifically Europe mostly. But we’ve got a lot of islands out here, but also a lot of great players and competitors from around the United States,” Tannatt said.
Urbandale-native and Professional Disc Golfer Gannon Buhr competed at the Discmania Challenge.
Buhr said that he’s happy Iowa is one of the stops for the PDGA tour.
“It’s awesome to be here and it’s so cool to see this, you know, small town Iowa. Everyone’s come together for this event and it’s become a very important event on the, on the disc golf cart tour,” Buhr said.
Nathan Sturtz, a disc golf fan that travelled to the Discmania Challenge from Wisconsin, said that disc golf tournaments allow fans to get closer to the pros.
“That’s one of the best things about disc golf. Any other sport, pro sport, you don’t really have accessibility to the pros. And here, I mean, you get to talk, they’re just the right here. It’s fabulous,” Sturtz said.
Rounds two and three of the Discmania Challenge will take place on June 28 and 29.
